Is my child's nervous system stuck?

A 2-minute checklist for parents of babies and kids. Count the signs that sound familiar, then see what they might mean.

How your child's nervous system works

Your child's nervous system runs everything: breathing, digestion, sleep, growth, and mood. It works a lot like a car with two pedals.

The gas pedal is the "fight or flight" side. It speeds the heart up and gets the body ready to react, which is exactly what you want in a scary moment. The brake pedal is the "rest and digest" side. It slows things down so the body can sleep, digest, grow, and heal. Healthy kids switch between the two all day.

Stress pushes the gas pedal down: a hard birth, illness, feeding struggles, a loud and busy world. When that stress comes early and often, some kids get stuck on the gas. Their body stays in react mode, and it shows up in signs like the ones below, often long before anyone puts a name to it.

What your checks might mean

Babies

1 sign: Worth paying attention to. One sign on its own can have a simple explanation, and it's a good reason to ask questions.

2 or more: That's significant. Your baby's body may be working harder than it needs to, and a gentle check is a good next step.

Toddlers and kids

1 sign: Worth keeping an eye on, especially if it's been going on a while.

2 to 3 signs: Your child's body may be working harder than it needs to. A gentle nervous-system check can show how they're adapting.

4 or more: You're not imagining it, and you're not alone. Many of the families we see started right where you are.

Why not just wait it out?

Parents often hear that their child will grow out of it. Sometimes they do. Other times the pattern changes shape: the colicky baby becomes the toddler with ear infection after ear infection, then the kid who's overwhelmed by noise and clothes. Paying attention early gives you more options.

What happens next

At your free consult, we start with your child's story. If it makes sense to go further, we do a gentle exam and use scans when they help, to see how your child's nervous system is adapting. For babies, the pressure is fingertip-light, and you stay with your child the whole time. We'll always tell you if something calls for your pediatrician.

FAQs

Is my child's nervous system stuck?

If several of these signs sound familiar, it may be. The checklist shows you a pattern. A gentle exam is how we find out what's really going on.

What does fight or flight look like in a child?

In babies, it often looks like a body that's hard to settle: crying after feeds, a tight neck and shoulders, favoring one side. In older kids, it can look like frequent illness, getting overstimulated easily, anger that lingers, or a hard time with change.

Do kids grow out of it?

Some do. Others carry the pattern into a new form as they grow. That's why we'd rather look early than wait and see.
